Ferrere do Zêzere is a relatively small municipality within the Santarém District of Central Portugal.
At the last census, taken in 2011, the population was recorded as 8,619.
Ferrere do Zêzere is situated on a small peninsula on the edge of Zêzere and is divided into 7 freguesias:
- Águas Belas
- Areias e Pias
- Ferreira do Zêzere
- Igreja Nova do Sobral
- Nossa Senhora do Pranto
Within the Ferrere do Zêzere municipality there have been found remnants of monuments and archaeological remains. In particular, the small town of Dornes, a historical and religious seat of the parish, has been mentioned in the religious order of Dornes and also referenced to the Templar Commendation of Dornes, both in the 13th Century. The pentagon shaped Tower of Dornes (Torre Templaria de Dornes) was donated to the Order of the Templars at the time of the Christian Reconquest, and can still be visited today offering amazing views over the River Zêzere.
Throughout Ferrere do Zêzere there are small villages with magnificent churches to see. In the village of Areias, the Church of Our Lady of Grace (Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graca) offers a spendid example of a 15th century church.
Lago Azul (Blue lake) provides a safe area for swimming with lifeguards at peak times and also has a cafe bar for refreshments.
For those a little more adventurous, there is a skate park near the Pavilhao Municipal in Ferreira do Zêzere and the adventure park Valadas Ferreira do Zêzere, 7km from Ferreira do Zêzere, where you can climb, slide and have paintballing fun.
Education in the area has been grouped together with the formation of the Agrupento Escolas Ferreira do Zêzere in 2001. The group covers all the educational structures of the Municipality from pre-school (age from 3-6) to the 12th year (age 18 years).
You will find the usual range of shops offering a wide variety of produce and wares. There is a large Intermarché on the outskirts of Ferrere do Zêzere. Other facilities include banks, lawyers, a sports complex with a swimming pool, gymnastics centre, central cultural centre and a market place (Mercado Municipal).
Bus travel from Lisbon, Sete Rios to Ferrere do Zêzere takes just over 2 hours, and has a regular service.
